About 950 students from El Camino Real Charter High School have received their diplomas — and will now head off to the next stage of their lives.
The Woodland Hills charter school held its commencement ceremony for the class of 2023 on Friday night, June 2, in the campus’s stadium.
El Camino Real is noted for its winning academic decathlon teams. In March, for example, the Royals beat 59 other academic decathlon teams at the state competition in Santa Clara.
A month later, in Frisco, Texas, El Camino Real beat 54 top teams from around the country — to win the United States Academic Decathlon. Students competed in academic matches, including live trivia, timed essays and impromptu speeches, focused on the theme, “The American Revolution and the New Nation.” The team’s score was 49,161.6 out of a possible 60,000 points, earning the San Fernando Valley school its ninth national title.
The school opened in February 1969 as a senior high school for the 10th- to 12th-grades. In the mid-1980s, the school added ninth-grade. It became an independent charter school in 2011.
