A woman stole a transport van belonging to an adult day care center that was idling in Van Nuys, leading police on a short pursuit while an elderly man was sitting in the back, authorities said.
The driver of the van was working the morning of Thursday, April 20, possibly picking up clients. He reported the vehicle stolen to supervisors at the day care center, who then called police, said Officer Mike Lopez, an LAPD spokesman.
LAPD patrols and a helicopter searched for the van, eventually finding the vehicle near Riverside Drive and Woodman Avenue at around 9:30 a.m., Lopez said.
Police were also able to track the van because it had a device broadcasting its location installed, Lopez said.
When officers attempted to stop the van, the woman in the driver’s seat took off.
She led police on a chase about five miles north, eventually stopping at Covello Street and Tyrone Avenue, where officers took her into custody.
When police searched the van, they found the elderly man still inside.
Lopez said the man was not injured. His age was not given.
The woman suspected of stealing the van was not identified Thursday.
