A suspect fired shots inside a West Hollywood apartment complex on Friday, April 7, injuring a woman when at least two bullets passed through a wall and into her adjacent unit — prompting an hours-long standoff when the suspect refused to exit his apartment, authorities said.
The shooting was reported about 8:15 a.m. at the building at Santa Monica Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. A sheriff’s spokesman told KNX News at the scene that the woman — in her 50s —suffered two gunshots, one in the upper body and one in the lower extremities.
Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, sheriff’s officials said. The suspect fired a total of five shots, KNX reported.
Sheriff’s deputies attempted to make contact with the suspect, who refused to exit his third-floor apartment, prompting the standoff and evacuations of some building residents.
Members of the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, the agency’s SWAT team, were brought to the scene via helicopter, which landed on La Brea just north of Santa Monica.
There were no reports of any other injuries.
KNX reported shortly after 2:30 p.m. that loud blasts could be heard coming from the building, likely the result of the specialized deputies setting off flash-bangs or other type of device in hopes of getting the suspect to surrender.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
