Actress Angela Bassett will speak to Chapman University‘s graduating class during its commencement ceremony on May 19.
The award-winning actress, director and executive producer will also receive an honorary doctor of the arts degree during the celebration.
“From her portrayal of pioneering women to her personal passion to mentor and elevate filmmakers through her own production company, (Bassett) is truly inspirational,” Daniele Struppa, Chapman University president, said in a statement. “I am excited that she will share her journey with our students as they embark upon their own career paths.”
Bassett is maybe most recognized for her roles in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Waiting to Exhale,” “How Stella Got Her Groove Back,” “Boyz N the Hood” and “What’s Love Got to Do With It.”
Aside from acting, she is also principal of her own production company, Bassett Vance Productions along with a partnership with the Paramount Global company, MTV Entertainment Studios.
She has received a SAG award, an African American Film Critics Association Honors Award, 14 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Image Awards, two Golden Globe awards and a Black Girls Rock! Icon Award. She was recently honored with Time Magazine’s Women of the Year and Glamour’s Women of the Year awards.
Past Chapman University commencement speakers include Nobel Peace Prize winner Laureate Nadia Murad and “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer.
