A Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy is accused of illegally possessing an assault rifle and specialized bullets after authorities found them in a closet at his home, District Attorney George Gascón announced on Thursday, April 6.
Brandon Garmon, 45, was charged with felony counts of possessing the weapon and a destructive device.
Authorities found the unregistered AR-15 assault rifle and tracer ammunition — a type of round built with a small pyrotechnic charge that burns as the bullet leaves the barrel — in Garmon’s home after serving him with a search warrant in April 2020.
It was not clear why he was not charged until three years later.
“It is illegal to possess an AR-15 assault rifle in California and I expect everyone, including sworn officers, to follow the law,” Gascón said in a news release. “These weapons have repeatedly led to massive loss of life across this nation and I fully intend to enforce the ban in Los Angeles.”
Garmon’s arraignment will be scheduled for a later date.
Neither Gascón nor the sheriff’s department said what area Garmon patrols or what his responsibilities are.
It was not immediately clear if he was arrested, or posted bail, or what his status with the department is following the charges.
