Investigators have arrested 36-year-old Aaron Romo, an Anaheim man suspected of killing a former romantic partner, Anaheim police said in a Monday statement.
Around 2:24 p.m. on Friday, March 17, police were sent to reports of suspicious circumstances at an apartment at the 1900 block of South Union Street. Police found 24-year-old Mirelle Mateus from La Palma dead inside the apartment, a police news release said.
Police confirmed Mateus and Romo were previously in a romantic relationship but did not provide more details. Homicide detectives believe she was slain and identified Romo as a suspect. Additional information on the circumstances of Mateus’s death was not immediately made available.
Romo was out on bail for a domestic violence case from Dec. 5. He was charged with corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant and false imprisonment, both felonies, as well as misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and battery, according to court records. It was not immediately known who the victim was.
Romo was arrested Friday in Riverside County and booked on suspicion of murder at the Anaheim Police Department Detention Facility. Authorities said he was being held without bail.
Detectives believe Romo has assaulted other women in the past, and asked anyone with previous contact with Romo to come forward, the news release said. Anyone with information related to the homicide or Romo can contact Anaheim police at 714-321-3669 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS or www.occrimestoppers.org
